Soft Washing
Have you ever heard of soft washing your home?
Now we can give your home a bath!
How many times have you pulled up into your driveway, and see that patch of green on the shady side of your house. Algae. You finally decide to take a closer look at it to see the algae is all over the house worse than you thought it was, but now you see mildew, too! You’re on a mission now…REMOVE IT AT ALL COSTS!
You are armed with your weapons: Your garden hose with that fancy new sprayer. A bucket filled with Dawn. A scrub brush that’s been collecting dust in the garage attached to a wooden pole you stole from a pushbroom in the basement. You scrub. You rinse. You repeat. You have barely made a dent in it. Your will is wavering! What can be done about this ugly mess on YOUR HOUSE?
Well, lucky for you, there IS something that can be done about it: Call Above & Beyond Window Cleaning at 781-346-9911.
Do I Need Soft washing?
A number of years ago, pressure washing your house was the norm. It turned out a lot of the pressure washing being done to homes was causing damage to the exterior by leaving those ugly “tiger stripes” on the siding from the pressure washer gun. Even worse, there were cases when water from the gun was forced in between and behind the vinyl siding, which introduced mold and mildew between the siding and the wall of the home.
Along came soft washing. Soft washing uses special biodegradable chemicals to actually break down and kill all mold, mildew, and algae on your home. Standard spraying with a pressure washer may remove some of it, but it does not KILL it and disinfect the exterior of your home like soft washing does.
We still use a pressure washer to clean your home when soft washing, but the difference is that we use special tips on our pressure washer’s wand that basically turn it into a huge squirt gun that allows us to reach up to 30 feet high. There is very little pressure from the gun; in fact you can even put your hand in front of the gun while it’s spraying and it will not hurt you.
What does this mean to you? There is no risk of water being forced into the through windows or being sprayed in between the pieces of the siding, eliminating any risk of damage being done to your home during the soft wash process.
Here’s a quick rundown of how it works:
- We arrive and hook up all the equipment to your water supply
- We spray the plants and surrounding foliage/landscaping that are close to the house with water to soak them before we apply the cleaning solution. This is to help prevent the plants from “breathing in” the cleaning solution.
- We entirely cover one side of the house with the solution and then move to a second side of the house, letting all sides of the home soak for about 15-20 minutes per side. This allows the cleaning solution to kill all of the nasty substances on the surface. If the wall is in very bad condition, we may re-apply the solution 2-3 times in order for it to be 100% effective.

- We go back to the first wall we treated and rinse with clean water, repeating until all sides of the home are done.
- We do a walk around the house after letting it dry for 20-30 minutes to check and see if there are any spots we missed and retreat if necessary.
- We do another rinse of the foliage to make sure all of the solution is off the plants.
- You come outside to see how things are looking and your jaw drops as you stare in wonder at how shiny your house looks now.
Does it work?
Yes. We have had very good results cleaning brick, vinyl siding and clapboard. Aluminum siding can be cleaned as well, but it suffers from oxidation because it is aluminum, so after your home is cleaned, it may still look dull. Cleaner, but dull. This is the due to the oxidation, not the cleaning solution or the method itself. Your windows will be cleaner when we are done with the soft wash, and the frames of the windows will really pop and stand out as well.
BUT…we do not include a window cleaning with the soft washing service, so if you don’t want the windows streaky and water spotted when we are finished, you will have to book a window cleaning with us as well. This can usually be done on the same day, but the job will have to be seen in person first in order to be sure. Soft washing can also be done with decks and patios, especially if you have a Trex deck. See our gallery page for before and after pics of some of the houses and decks we have done.
